No, MEPs did not dance to provoke Russia

“This morning, #EU deputies danced a “#Moskal” and jumped for joy, thus addressing a provocation to the entire Russian population”, advance several publications shared on social networks in recent weeks. Supporting evidence: a video is attached, in which people actually dance in a hemicycle, looking at a screen. The footage was reportedly shot on September 2.

The authors of these publications also explain: “Ukrainians call Russians ‘moskal’, a derogatory term that targets the entire Russian population. »

If European countries have widely shown their support for Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, this video would be a real affront on the part of the leaders. “A behavior unworthy of our elected officials”, exclaim some internet users. “They want to humiliate all Russians, not just leaders and soldiers. Everyone is targeted, ”say others.

But did MEPs actually perform this dance? 20 minutes make the point.

FAKE OFF

In reality, this video is not from last September 2, as the publications claim. By reverse image search, it is possible to find the scene published in November 2021, so well before the invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

The search leads, among other things, to a YouTube video named Dubioza kolektiv – Bella Ciao live at Council of Europe Strasbourg. Sor, according to the title, a video shot at the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg. Dubioza kolektiv is a Bosnian music group, and it was on the program of the World Forum for Democracy in 2021. With, of course, no intention of humiliating the Russian people through its performance.

The Council of Europe has also published, on his facebook pagea video of this performance, explaining in legend that the group was invited to conclude the session of this forum.

It is therefore this event that we see on the videos shared on social networks. The architecture of the building is the same, and we observe the yellow jerseys worn by the group.

As explained above, this is the Council of Europe. Despite its name, it is not part of the institutions of the European Union, unlike the European Council or the European Parliament, where precisely the deputies sit. The Council of Europe, which hosted this concert, is an international organization founded in 1949 and whose aim is to promote and defend human rights.
