Nintendo Initially Considered Super Nintendo Switch Name for Switch 2

Kouichi Kawamoto and Takuhiro Dohta, the producers behind the Switch 2, revealed in a Q&A session that the new console was almost named ‘Super Nintendo Switch’. However, the company ultimately decided on ‘Switch 2’ instead.

The name ‘Super Nintendo Switch’ was considered because it echoed the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or SNES. But the team realized that the SNES and the new Switch didn’t quite align. The SNES was released after the original NES and couldn’t play NES games. Since the new Switch can play games from the original Switch, the ‘Super’ name didn’t feel right.

Nintendo Initially Considered Super Nintendo Switch Name for Switch 2

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, released years ago, set a standard for gaming consoles. Nintendo wanted the new Switch to have its own identity. Using numbers instead of ‘Super’ made it clear that this was a new console and a new standard for the Switch series, which first launched in 2017.

“From the start, we wanted the Switch 2 to be a system that everyone could enjoy,” said Takuhiro Dohta. “That vision hasn’t changed since the first Switch was released.”
