Nintendo’s current president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has announced that the company has received 2.2 million pre-orders for the Switch 2 console through its My Nintendo Store in Japan alone. This number far exceeds the company’s initial expectations and the available stock of Switch 2 consoles.
Switching to a Lottery System
Due to the overwhelming demand, Nintendo has warned that some pre-order customers may be entered into a lottery system to purchase the console instead of receiving it directly. Furukawa acknowledged that the company had prepared for a strong demand but was still surprised by the sheer number of pre-orders. Nintendo is working with multiple retailers and is adjusting its production to meet the demand.
The decision to implement a lottery system is likely due to Nintendo’s inability to fulfill all pre-orders with the available stock. The company is taking steps to increase production and ensure that future stock levels are sufficient. Nintendo’s statement was made through a post on its official X account, where Furukawa addressed the issue directly.

Global Demand Remains Uncertain
While the situation is currently specific to Japan, it remains to be seen how demand for the Switch 2 will play out in other countries. Nintendo’s efforts to ramp up production and work with retailers will be crucial in meeting the global demand for the new console. The pre-order period for the Switch 2 through My Nintendo Store is set to end, with the console scheduled for release on June 5.
