It seems love just wasn’t in the cards for Nina Dobrev and Shaun White after all. The couple has called off their engagement, a surprising twist for fans who just saw Dobrev share a sweet photo of them in bed days before the news broke.
Just last Saturday, on September 5, Dobrev, who is 36, posted a fun Instagram reel. “Summer doesn’t officially end until September 22 FYI 🌞,” she wrote. The post featured highlights from recent months, including several getaway snapshots. Tucked among those happy memories was a cozy selfie of Dobrev and White, 39, lounging together in bed. Little did anyone know, their split would be confirmed less than a week later.
The romance between the actress and the Olympic snowboarder first sparked rumors back in February 2020. Reports confirmed they were officially a couple two months later. Fast forward to April 2021, and whispers from those close to the pair suggested they were already picturing a future together. “Nina has had many relationships that didn’t work out in the past,” a source shared at the time. “But since meeting Shaun, you can tell she’s super excited about how far this relationship has come. They are slowly taking steps toward starting a future together.”
Distance often played a part in their relationship, but they always made it work. White once opened up about their system in October 2021. “Plane tickets are pretty much booked for any opportunity we get to see each other,” he explained. “So I know over the holidays we’re going to see each other and probably Christmas again. If anything pops up in between, then I’ll go see her. You just got to make it work.” He also gave credit to Dobrev, saying, “Nina is super organized and always on top of it, so I give her credit. She always finds a way to make it happen.”
Dobrev was White’s biggest cheerleader during his final run at the 2022 Winter Olympics. “We’ll be eagerly watching from home and cheering him on,” she told reporters in February 2022. “I’m so, so excited for him. I can’t wait.” She even commented on his decision to retire from the sport. “He’s had an incredibly long and successful run in this sport. He knows when it’s time to retire, and he’s decided that now is the time.”
After four years of dating, Dobrev and White finally confirmed their engagement in October 2024. Dobrev shared a series of photos on Instagram showing them in front of a beautiful floral arch. “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé 💍♾️,” she captioned the post. White quickly replied in the comments, “She said YES 💍♾️.” Another insider revealed that Dobrev was “totally surprised,” and White added, “They’re both incredibly happy.” It looked like their future was set, making this recent breakup even more of a head-scratcher.
