Nick Mohammed Anchors Comic Relief Following Chortle Award Wins

LONDON — Actor and comedian Nick Mohammed is currently co-presenting BBC One’s ongoing Red Nose Day telethon, broadcasting live as of Friday evening. The 45-year-old is sharing hosting duties for the “Comic Relief: Funny for Money” campaign alongside Davina McCall, Joel Dommett, and Catherine Tate.

The high-profile broadcasting appearance follows a successful week for Mohammed, who secured two Chortle Awards on Tuesday. He was named “Best TV Comedian” for his recent stint on the reality competition “Celebrity Traitors” and won “Best Tour” for his live “Show Pony” act featuring his alter-ego, Mr Swallow.

Raised in Leeds by a Cypriot mother and a Trinidadian father, Mohammed developed an early interest in performance after receiving a Paul Daniels magic set. Speaking to The Guardian, he stated that magic functioned as a coping mechanism during his youth. “I was a short, brown kid growing up in Leeds in the 80s and 90s, and was the only person of colour in my primary school,” Mohammed said. “I was performing to overcompensate for being an outsider. Not that I was bullied – I had a wonderful and idyllic childhood, in general. But, much like comedy, magic is a defence mechanism, and a helpful way to survive the playground.”

Before his transition into entertainment, Mohammed pursued an academic career in the sciences. He studied geophysics at Durham University, where he met his wife Becka while playing in the St Aidan’s College orchestra, and later began a PhD in seismology at Cambridge University. His trajectory shifted after a BBC producer scouted him during a performance with the Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe.

Recounting his departure from academia to The Observer, Mohammed detailed his realization that laboratory research did not suit his ambitions. “It was all geared towards a life of academia or working for an oil company, which didn’t sit well with me,” he said. “When I joined Footlights, it ignited an inner fire… I had this romantic moment, walking away… knowing deep down I was never coming back.”

Mohammed has since built a diverse acting portfolio, most notably portraying Nathan Shelley in the Apple TV series “Ted Lasso,” which is anticipated to return for a fourth season later in 2026. His other verified television credits include “Renegade Nell,” “Intelligence,” “Reggie Perrin,” and “Slow Horses.” He is also scheduled to appear in the upcoming psychological thriller “Control” alongside James McAvoy and Julianne Moore.

Looking ahead, it was officially announced earlier in March that Mohammed will host the 50th-anniversary Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
