Nice: he shouts words in Arabic and threatens the sacristan of Notre-Dame Basilica

A 26-year-old Tunisian national in an irregular situation entered Notre-Dame basilica in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) on Monday evening and was threatening to the sacristan, spitting on the ground and yelling words in Arabic.

The perpetrator spat on the ground and then left, before returning ten minutes later. This time he was threatening. The sacristan then decided to trigger the emergency call button to alert the police.

The suspect then fled, while throwing hostile gestures at the sacristan. The latter decided to follow his attacker in the street, keeping the police on the phone. The man was arrested without resistance near the Basilica and taken into police custody. Hitherto unknown to the police, the individual was heavily intoxicated.

Eric Ciotti and Christian Estrosi reacted

In the aftermath of the events, several political leaders wanted to react. At the microphone of CNEWS, Eric Ciotti, LR deputy for the 1st constituency of the Alpes-Maritimes, wondered “why this person was still in France”.

“Justice must be extremely severe while we will soon commemorate the attack of October 29, 2020”, for his part pleaded on Twitter Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice.

This incident takes place a few days before the commemoration of the terrorist attack on Notre-Dame, a year ago, which claimed the lives of three people in the basilica.

In the meantime, an expert psychiatrist confirmed that the suspect did not have “all his head”. The individual was interned at Sainte-Marie hospital for treatment.
