Key Developments in UK Tourism
The United Kingdom is experiencing a surge in tourism, with nearly 38 million visitors in 2023, including over 2.2 million from Spain. This growth is expected to continue, with the UK government implementing new measures to update and digitize its borders.
Understanding the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
The UK government has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) program to enhance security and control over foreign visitors. The ETA is a digital permit required for individuals, including children, visiting the UK for up to six months or transiting through the country without a British or Irish passport.
Exemptions and Requirements
Those exempt from applying for an ETA include individuals with permission to live, work, or study in the UK, as well as holders of a visa or passport from a British overseas territory. The ETA is linked to the individual’s passport and is valid for two years or until the passport expires.
Implementation Timeline
The ETA program will be fully operational in April 2025, with a phased rollout starting in November 2023 for certain nationalities. Citizens of EU countries, including Spain, may be required to apply from March 5, 2025, with authorization starting on April 2, 2025.
Application Process and Cost
The ETA can be requested through the UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website, with a cost of £10 per individual. The application is usually processed within three business days, and the ETA is linked to the individual’s passport.
