New twist in $1 billion crypto lawsuit against Ronaldo

Nieuwe wending in $1 miljard dollar crypto rechtszaak tegen Ronaldo

A few weeks ago, Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo was targeted by a group of crypto investors. The former Ballon d'Or winner has been indicted for his role in promoting Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange. The legal battle is still going well as Ronaldo is apparently difficult to reach. The public prosecutor has now submitted an application that could make the process easier.

Binance users are searching for Ronaldo

Last Tuesday, prosecutors filed a motion requesting “alternative service” as part of the legal process.

In this case, the service simply involves issuing legal documents to Ronaldo. Instead of the usual process of physically handing the documents to the defendant, prosecutors want to use alternative methods.

It wouldn't be an easy task to approach Ronaldo. The motion highlights the uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo's recent address in Saudi Arabia and therefore suggests a different approach.

The request states that prosecutors have created a special website that collects all the documents in the case.

They want to send this website to Ronaldo's verified X accounts, but also “to the email addresses of his domestic attorney involved in ongoing federal lawsuits in the United States.”

In this way they hope to reach the attacker from the Saudi football club Al-Nassr. Prosecutors said their proposal was in line with international agreements.

In court thanks to NFT actions

This is a so-called class action lawsuit, also known as a class action lawsuit. This means that a group of Binance users have jointly filed a lawsuit against Ronaldo.

Ronaldo signed a multi-year deal with Binance in late 2022 to launch various non-fungible token (NFT) collections into the world. Prosecutors accuse Ronaldo of “promoting, supporting and/or actively participating in the offering and sale of unregistered securities in connection with Binance.”

Through the lawsuit, they hope to get a huge compensation of one billion dollars from Ronaldo.
