New protests in Israel against judicial reform

Several tens of thousands of Israelis They protested on Thursday against judicial reform promoted by the government, in a new day of mobilization characterized by clashes between demonstrators and police and after the approval in Parliament of a measure that limits the causes for which the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu You may be suspended from your duties.

The reform seeks to increase the power of parliamentarians over that of magistrates and, according to its detractors, endangers the democratic nature of the State of Israel.

During the demonstrations against the change, about ten protesters were detained for disturbing public order in Tel Aviv, police said. Security forces used water cannons to disperse the crowd that blocked the ring road.

In addition, several thousand people gathered in Jerusalem in front of Netanyahu’s residence, and there were minor protests in Haifa (north), and in Beer Sheva (south).

In parallel, the israeli parliament adopted a law on Thursday that limits the possibility of declaring a prime minister incapable of holding office. After the reform, the head of the Executive can only be removed from his functions in case of physical or mental incapacity, and only if he requests it or after a government vote with a majority of three quarters of the ministers.

The opposition denounced that it is a text tailored to Netanyahu, referring to the criminal proceedings opened against him for corruption.
