New phenomenon: Bitcoin art from the Netherlands

The popularity of crypto has now also reached the art world, more and more artists are taking the crypto world as inspiration for making art. In addition to a decorative function, art is also used as a statement and investment. Crypto investors see the rise of ‘crypto art‘ as a new way to propagate the ideas behind the digital coins.

For example, the new trend has not gone unnoticed in the Netherlands and two brothers from Rotterdam have founded the company from their passion for bitcoin and art. Bitcoin Design established. Through art they make it possible to make the digital currency tangible. All artworks are made by hand, which ensures that each piece is unique. In that sense, it is similar to a non-fungible token (NFT). They are irreplaceable and non-exchangeable.

Bitcoin Design’s bronze statues

Bitcoin Design’s most popular artworks are the bronze statues. The bronze bitcoins are cast using a 6,000-year-old technique, the ‘lost-wax method’. A wax model is cast for each copy, each of which receives a one-off mould. The wax is melted out of the mold (‘lost wax’) after which the refractory mold is baked in the oven. The red-hot, liquid bronze is then manually poured into the mould. This old craft is carried out in collaboration with the family business ‘bronsfoundry Stijlaart’ from Tiel, the finishing is then done by the brothers themselves. In addition, only materials of high and durable quality are used.

Bitcoin art as an investment

2022 is not an easy year for the king of cryptocurrencies. The price of bitcoin has fallen since the beginning of the year by a percentage of about 60%. Bronze is an alloy consisting mainly of copper (about 88%) and tin (about 12%). The price of copper has done a lot less badly: it has lost about 12% this year. Copper appears to be essential for the energy transition, which is why the copper price may continue to rise in the future.

The increasing demand may be offset by a decrease in production in the coming years. This is due to a possible shortage of new projects. Since the corona crisis, copper production has been on the back burner, partly due to staff shortages. This is similar to Bitcoin’s protocol, where the number of new BTC also decreases over time.

Bring bitcoin to life

Bitcoin merchandise and gadgets have been around for a long time, a mug with a bitcoin logo already has a permanent place on the desk of many crypto investors. With the new development of crypto art, a new market is emerging, which will most likely take off in the next bull market. Hopefully, the emergence of crypto art will give crypto thinking a push in the right direction.
