Tragedy Strikes New Orleans on New Year’s Eve
A devastating incident occurred in the heart of New Orleans early Wednesday morning, resulting in at least 10 fatalities. According to reports, a man drove a vehicle into a crowd at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets, a popular area for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Authorities Identify Suspect
Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar. Reports indicate that Jabbar was carrying an Islamic State flag and wearing military attire at the time of the attack. Authorities are investigating the possibility of additional individuals involved in the incident, including a second suspect who allegedly rented the vehicle used in the attack.
Investigation Ongoing
According to Fox News, the vehicle used in the attack crossed the border from Mexico to the United States last month, on November 16. However, it is unclear if Jabbar was the driver at that time. CNN reports that multiple suspicious explosive devices were found in a cooler in the truck, and the vehicle has been identified as a white electric Ford F-150 Lightning, registered to a man in Houston who rented it out on the Turo portal.
Aftermath and Response
The driver of the truck died following a shootout with police, according to local media. A press conference is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) to provide further updates on the incident.
