The Catholic Church has a new pope, and he’s an American. Robert Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV, appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, greeted by 40,000 cheering Christians in St. Peter’s Square. Cardinal Domenic Bambertie made the announcement, saying Prevost chose the name Pope Leo XIV. This is the 14th time a pope has used this name.
A Historic Conclave
The conclave that chose Prevost took four rounds of voting. The white smoke signaling a new pope was released on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Thousands of Christians gathered in St. Peter’s Square cheered when they saw the smoke. The voting process lasted several dozen minutes. After it ended, the Vatican released a statement from Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi, saying the swift decision showed unity within the church. For comparison, Pope Francis was elected in the fifth round.
The New Pope’s First Appearance
Before Prevost appeared, the crowd chanted “Viva papa” or “long live the pope.” A band played music under the balcony. When Prevost finally emerged, the crowd erupted in cheers.
The BBC reported on the event live.
