Netherlands: Amsterdam bans cruise ships in its historic center

A new measure to give the inhabitants of Amsterdam their peace of mind. The municipal council of the Dutch capital has adopted a motion which aims to close a cruise ship terminal in its city center, the city confirmed on Thursday July 20.

“Polluting cruises do not correspond to the sustainable ambitions of our city”, said the center-liberal formation D66, at the origin of the motion. According to them, cruise ship passages are also incompatible with “the construction of a second bridge over the IJ”an old sea arm transformed into an artificial lake located in Amsterdam.

The ban sets a new milestone in the fight against mass tourism. It comes just months after the ban on smoking cannabis in the city’s red light district. A campaign had also been launched aimed at dissuading British tourists from consuming alcohol and drugs in Amsterdam.
