Video streaming service Netflix continues to work steadily on its gaming division. As a next step, the streaming service will start with a cloud offer in which games hosted by Netflix can be played on many devices.
Netflix cloud gaming launches on TVs & streaming devices
A first beta phase is to start with a small number of users in Great Britain and Canada and take place on selected TV and streaming devices, in the next few weeks it should also be possible to test on PCs and Macs on Netflix.com via the browser.
The smartphone should be used to play on the TV, for which Netflix offers a separate controller app. The app then allows the player to control the game on their smartphone, using the touchscreen as an input device. On the PC and Mac, of course, the game should then be played with a mouse and keyboard. Netflix leaves it open whether controller support will also be guaranteed in the future.
The first devices to be supported in the beta: Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Player, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. Other devices are to follow. Oxenfree and Molehew’s Mining Adventure are the game titles available at launch.
Streaming service would like to evaluate feedback
The “limited beta” is designed to “test our game streaming technology and controller and improve the experience for members over time,” according to Netflix. How long the beta phase will last and whether other countries will be added is currently not entirely clear.
For the time being, the company would like to receive feedback from users and evaluate it. Neflix itself writes: “By making games available on more devices, we hope to make gaming even easier for our members around the world. While we’re still in the early stages of our gaming journey, we look forward to bringing joy to our members through games. We look forward to hearing from our beta testers and learning more as we continue along the way.”
