The rumor becomes clearer. Netflix seems to be well and truly on the hunt for sharing accounts between friends. According to an internal memo seen by the New York Times, the platform should start cracking before the end of the year. The trend already seemed to be taking shape for a few months, the streaming giant had hinted that it was going to add a supplement to any household that shared its password with another household.
In a letter to shareholders sent in April as part of the first quarter results, management said about 100 million households would share their account. While the platform has 221 million subscribers, the actual number is expected to be much higher. A test has also been carried out in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. An additional $2.99 was charged to subscribers who wished to share their account.
