Coach Néstor García separated from the Argentine basketball team less than a year after taking office and in the middle of the qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup.
The Argentine Basketball Confederation (CABB) announced in a statement Garcia’s departure “for reasons of his privacy that we respect,” without providing further details. However, it transpired that the technician suffers from personal problems that do not allow him to meet the demands of the position.
The departure of García, who had replaced Sergio Hernández, was announced a day after Monday’s 95-77 win at home against the Bahamas for the American qualifiers for the World Cup in Indonesia-Japan-Philippines next year.
Gonzalo García, assistant to the outgoing coach, will lead the team in the AmeriCup that will take place in Brazil between September 2 and 11.
The CABB will take the next few days to hire a new coach for the November commitments against the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas as visitors for the World Cup qualifier.
