Nerian Network Web 3.0 – the new internet – runs on the old model

Making CDs while the world listens to Spotify. Making the best diesel engines when the world goes electric. Saving Fiat money, when there is Bitcoin. We generally agree that there is something wrong with each of these things; so why are we deploying the new internet on the old model? A model that we are trying to distance ourselves from?

Over the past decade, the Internet has been dominated by a handful of tech giants who have developed the Internet’s infrastructure significantly. Theoretically, our internet usage corresponds to a highway on which the world drives with their cars. Now the highway has to get even bigger and enter unexplored – and even unimaginable – territory.

At the end of 2020, we were able to store approximately 2.9% of all data created since 2010. The rapid growth of IoT, autonomous EVs, the metaverse and the growth of the blockchain industry will generate an unprecedented amount of data volumes in the coming years. Even with the existing growth rate of capabilities; our global cloud storage capacity will shrink to 1.2% in 2030 and 0.8% in 2035. If you thought we were on an exponential growth curve of data production, wait the next ten years…

Over the past 12 years we have seen massive adoption of the new web; web 3. First, we were introduced to Bitcoin with its innovative new model of a digital store of value. Followed by several networks, such as Ethereum or Avalanche, which implement tokenomics in its model as a use case and incentive for the user of the network. Today, words like DeFi, DAO, NFTs and metaverse sound familiar to us. They all come with the promise of offering us a fully decentralized model.

When building fast and fancy electric vehicles, you can’t fill the highways with gas stations.

Blockchain technology is here to stay. We’ve seen a lot of projects come and go and have seen the technology experiment with some new ideas; but the general consensus is that you shouldn’t miss this train. This could have an even greater impact than the birth of the internet, essentially a free digital space.

Blockchain (or acyclic graphing is another technology) follows the idea of decentralizing information through its architecture of distributed ledgers; where anyone can verify every transaction and build trust in the network. A revolutionary and disruptive idea with the potential to change the way we perceive data in the future; instead of data in the center, the center could become the data.

However, all this data needs a high way to run on, a layer of infrastructure that is not allowable to be operational. Currently, the best options to go with are some major tech players that offer cloud storage. You basically rent some space on their servers to deploy your application in the form of a VPS (Virtual Private Server). So are 61.6% of Ethereum servers in the cloud. Essentially, this means that a presumably highly decentralized network runs more than half on cloud, providing services from a handful of players that control more than 80% of the cloud market.

In addition, centralizing data poses many privacy and security challenges. Storing data in one place or only a few places is not very efficient because the flow passes through many boundaries. It is also prone to hacks or exploits, where a single entity can experience big data breaches. Last but not least, the current cloud storage model is often perceived as controversial, as the data is also accessible to the entity; and can also be traded as part of their business model.

Ultimately, with this in mind – running the new web on old infrastructure – this story isn’t quite coherent. Although it is nice to see that projects are taking the initiative to offer running nodes as an alternative to the existing standard. This puts us in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go. What if we could all run a node independent of the conventional cloud that provides services? What if projects start to move away from existing models and look for alternative solutions within the blockchain space to use for cloud storage?

Nerian Network (@nerian_network) build physical infrastructure supported by their community. People are encouraged with their own currency NERIAN to buy a node license. This is the first real use case and utility for the token; and a crucial one for the further development of the project. The servers will be installed somewhere in Belgium and will generate internet capacity for applications to deploy. This starts with the applications Nerian is building, but who says other XRPL projects can’t come and use their technology?

It’s time for a choice, it’s time to have alternatives to build a real web 3, on the new internet.
