The spotlight found Neemias Queta in Barreiro this past Sunday. The Boston Celtics center was honored in his hometown. A new sports court in Bairro 6 now features his image. This special tribute also includes Nuno Belchior, a former beach soccer national team player.
Queta felt very touched by the honor. He loved getting this recognition at home. This is where he grew up. He had many experiences there as a young player. The new court sits right next to Barreirense, a club he truly loved. Queta graciously took photos and signed many autographs for the fans.
Beyond the hometown hero status, Queta has a big job ahead. He is back training with the Portuguese national basketball team. They are getting ready for the final phase of the European Championship. This major tournament kicks off on August 27.
Queta shared his thoughts on rejoining the squad. “It was great to train with the guys again,” he said. “I hadn’t seen many of them for years.” He noted that some teammates he hadn’t trained with for a long time. Yet, everyone quickly found their stride. “I remember their playing style well, and they remember mine,” Queta added. “There was an easy connection. I think we are on the right track.”

The NBA player had surgery on his left knee in May. Now, he feels nearly recovered. “I feel practically 100%,” Queta confirmed. “The surgery is over. I feel confident and very comfortable.” He knows the next step is crucial. “Now it’s about regaining strength and getting rhythm on the court,” he stated.
Queta has high hopes for the national team. Portugal is making its fourth appearance in the European Championship. This year’s tournament runs in Latvia from August 27 to September 14. “We want to go as far as possible,” Queta declared. “We are fighting for something unprecedented for Portugal.” He believes a historic ranking would be ideal. “That’s the right mindset to have,” he concluded.

Portugal will compete in Group A in Riga. They face a tough schedule. Their opponents include Serbia, host Latvia, Czech Republic, Turkey, and Estonia. Portugal’s first game is on August 27, when they take on the Czech Republic.
