Ndikumwenayo, debut and victory with Spain, which finishes fourth in the European

Thierry Ndikumwenayo, of Burundian origin, made his debut with Spain in an international competition in the European Championship for countries in Silesia (Poland) and did so with a victory in the 5,000 meters in a very tactical race and crossed the finish line in a time of 13:25.48 ahead of the Swede Andreas Almgren, second with 13:25.70, and the Italian Yemaneberhan Crippa, bronze medalist in the last European outdoors in Munich 2022.

The 26-year-old long-distance runner received Spanish nationality by naturalization letter from the Government last November 2022 and only two months later, in January, due to a delay in the arrival of his ID, he was unable to fight for the national crown of cross in Ortuella (Vizcaya) despite winning the race. The title was taken by Adel Mechaal.

In the final day, Esther Guerrero also achieved a fantastic victory in the 1,500 by beating the Polish Martyna Galant in a tight sprint, 4:11.77 by 4:11.78. Two bronzes were added by Fátima Diame in the long jump (6.56) and Marta Serrano (20 years old) in 3,000 obstacles (9:41.86). Spain finished fourth in the first division of the European Championship (the best position ever) with 352 points in the solid title of Italy (426.5). Poland was silver and France, bronze.
