Nationals beat Marlins 6-1 to avoid 100th loss

Anibal Sanchez pitched five scoreless innings as the Washington Nationals beat Miami 6-1 on Sunday hours after the Marlins announced manager Don Mattingly will not return next season.

The Marlins are 63-90 in Mattingly’s seventh year in charge and he is the team’s all-time leading wins manager. His contract ends after the campaign and both parties agreed that it is time to have a new person in charge.

Sánchez (3-6) allowed two hits and continued a solid streak of starts. He walked two and struck out four, improving his ERA to 1.31 in his last seven starts.

Mexican rookie Joey Meneses hit his 12th homer and CJ Abrams had three hits for the Nationals (53-99), who avoided a three-game series sweep and their 100th loss of the season. Miami took the season series 15-4.

Marlins starter Edward Cabrera came out with a strained right ankle after landing awkwardly while trying to field a bunt by Victor Robles. The right-hander threw several warm-up pitches before he was taken out.

For the Nationals, Mexican Joey Meneses 5-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. The Venezuelan Ildemaro Vargas 4-2 with an RBI. Dominican Victor Robles 4-2.
