Nationals avoid sweep against Dodgers, Cruz hits two hits

Erik Fedde and three relievers combined for a six-hit feat, Cesar Hernandez had an RBI single and the Washington Nationals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 on Wednesday to avoid a series sweep.

Washington had suffered nine straight losses to Los Angeles. The Nationals hadn’t beaten the Dodgers since Game 5 of the NL Division Series in 2019.

Tanner Rainey stranded two runners in the ninth for his fourth save in six chances. Flyers by Cody Bellinger and Will Smith marked the end of the match.

The Dodgers lost for just the second time in 11 games. They have the best record in the National League, at 29-14.

Fedde (3-3) pitched six innings, allowing four hits and walking one, in addition to prescribing six strikeouts.

The defeat was for the Mexican Julio Urías (3-4), who received one run and four hits in six innings, during which he struck out three opponents. He fell for the third time in four starts.

For the Dodgers, Puerto Rican Edwin Ríos 4-1. The Dominican Hanser Alberto 2-1.

For the Nationals, the Venezuelans Hernández 4-1 with an RBI, Alcides Escobar 2-1. The Dominicans Juan Soto 3-0, Nelson Cruz 3-2, Maikel Franco 3-1, Víctor Robles 1-0 with a run scored. Cuban Yadiel Hernández 1-0.
