National tribute to Jean-Paul Belmondo: he “deserves no less” than Johnny Hallyday, but “differently” believes Thierry Frémaux

For the general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, the actor nicknamed the Magnificent “was unique, there was no one really like him”.

The Minister of Culture Roselyne Bachelot evoked a national tribute to Jean-Paul Belmondo. The actor passed away on Monday, September 6 at the age of 88. “I believe that the homage paid to Johnny Hallyday was very beautiful, very strong, and Jean-Paul Belmondo does not deserve less, differently, something else, but the President of the Republic will know how to find“, declared Monday on franceinfo Thierry Frémaux, director of the Lumière Institute of Lyon, general delegate of the Festival of Cannes.

He estimates that “It’s even an international tribute that’s happening right now. There are his films on television, the people chatting on social media, everyone is thinking about him”.

“It’s good to talk about him, but we will also have to talk about him in a year, in a hundred years.”

All the people who have worked with Jean-Paul Belmondo speak of a benevolent man. “When we really took an interest in him, we realized that behind the star there was a good guy. He is someone who we imagined he was completely far away and elsewhere and he had the right to be, especially since he had suffered this stroke which had diminished him a little but he had overcome everything that. He had the cult of friendship and the younger generation took great care of him.

“He did everything and he could do everything, he had gone through the conservatory, he had a great theatrical culture. He was unique, there was no one really like him.”
