Nadia Podoroska will headline the historic Argentina Women’s Open

This Wednesday the historic women’s Argentina Open was officially presented, the first WTA category competition to be played in the country after 34 years. The tournament roster will feature seven players ranked in the top 150 of the world and will be led by Nadia Podoroska, the number one in South America and currently 36th in the world.

The Rosario will take one of the wild cards reserved for the top 50, the range of which cannot be entered in a WTA 125, and will be accompanied by three other Argentines: youth Solana Sierra (1185th; 12th in juniors), another local guest whose name was not revealed and the winner of the PreTournament, the unofficial contest that takes place this week in the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.

For the only remaining wild card, two strong alternatives emerge: Paula Ormaechea, current 223rd in the WTA ranking, number two in Argentina and former 59th in the world and Lourdes Carlé, the number three in the country, Argentina’s most advanced this season: it started the year 443rd and today is 276th, in addition to having won two singles in the Billie Jean King Cup -ex Fed Cup- against Kazakhstan in Córdoba: Yelena Rybakina (23rd) and Yulia Putintseva (30th).

“I am sure it will be the beginning of something beautiful for Argentine women’s tennis. Having a WTA implies growth and greater opportunities for all the girls in the region. For us it is a pride to be able to say that we also have an Argentina Open for women. We hope that the tournament will serve as a platform for development, “he said. Martín Jaite, director of the Argentina Open.

Podoroska herself, Roland Garros semi-finalist last year, exhibited his joy at having a first level competition in Argentina: “I am excited that the tournament will be held and that talk about women’s tennis again in Argentina. I am very happy that they have bet on this. “It took 34 years for Argentina to once again have a top circuit competition: December 6, 1987 Gabriela Sabatini won the last WTA in national territory after beating German Isabel Cueto 6-0 and 6-2 at BALTC.
