Living and Working on a Remote Island
Imagine waking up every morning to the sound of waves crashing against the shore and spending your days surrounded by nature’s beauty. The Scottish Wildlife Trust is offering a unique opportunity to live and work on the remote island of Handa, located off the east coast of Sutherland in the far north of the United Kingdom.
As a forest ranger on Handa Island, you will be responsible for managing the island’s rich biodiversity, including its seabird population, and ensuring the health and safety of visitors. You will also be working closely with a team of volunteers and maintaining the island’s buildings.
A Unique Work Environment
Handa Island is known for its crystal-clear waters, impressive cliffs, and diverse wildlife, including puffins, whales, and sharks. Although the island receives nearly 8,000 tourists a year, it is uninhabited except for the island’s staff and the wildlife that calls it home.
The island is accessible only by ferry, which leaves from the nearby town of Tarbet. As the island’s sole staff member, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the island’s facilities and services.
Requirements and Benefits
The ideal candidate for this role will be someone who is very sociable, with a passion for nature and conservation. While formal qualifications are not required, knowledge of marine and terrestrial ecology will be valued. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are also essential, as you will need to travel to the nearby town of Scourie to wash clothes or buy supplies.
In return for your hard work, you will receive an annual salary of £25,000, prorated to £25,600 for the six-month contract, which starts in March. You will also receive free accommodation on the island, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty.
