Marine Life Under Threat: The Rise of a Predatory Worm
The discovery of a predatory worm in European waters has raised concerns about the impact on marine biodiversity. The planarian, a flatworm native to the Pacific Ocean, has been found in the ports of Avilés, San Juan de Nieva, and the marina of Gijón.
This dark brown flatworm, with a lighter underside, is known to attack mussels and oysters, posing a significant threat to the aquaculture sector. The planarian’s arrival in Europe is believed to be the result of invasive species and maritime transport.
The University of Oviedo and the Regional Agri-Food Research and Development Service (Serida) collaborated to study the planarian, expanding knowledge of exotic species and their potential to become invasive.
The Planarian’s Impact on Ecosystems
The planarian’s ability to kill mussels and oysters puts biological diversity and economic sustenance at risk. Its presence in European waters could lead to ecological imbalance and a decrease in local native species.
Scientists collected 73 specimens of the planarian in different locations, with 45 individuals found in the port of Avilés. A reproductively active population of 24 specimens was also detected on a nearby beach.

The planarian’s spread is a warning message about the fragility of marine ecosystems. Human activity, particularly maritime transport, has contributed to the spread of exotic species.
