Mysterious Email Threats Target Referee Again in VAR Diego Dunajec Case

Referee Diego Dunajec, who oversaw the VAR in a recent match, has received a new email threat, according to sources close to the case. The identity of the sender remains unknown.

Prior to this, Dunajec had been targeted with threats on social media platforms. The sports security management successfully identified the individuals responsible, who are now facing prosecution. As reported on Friday, one of the individuals, who will be required to issue a public apology, has already been charged.

A judicial hearing is scheduled to take place shortly, where the agreement, including the apology request, will be formalized in writing. The individual in question is from Montevideo.

Another individual, a native of Rocha, who sent a second threat, was identified within 48 hours of committing the crime. This person was summoned to appear at the Prosecutor’s Office on Friday afternoon, and authorities anticipate a similar agreement will be reached.

According to research sources, both individuals are supporters of Peñarol. Meanwhile, law enforcement continues to work on identifying the person responsible for the third threat.

Background and Context

Dunajec, as the VAR official, played a crucial role in a contentious play that ultimately led to a penalty being awarded. He informed the main referee, Javier Burgos, that the play in question was, in his opinion, a foul. Burgos subsequently evaluated the play and made the final decision.

This decision sparked discontent among Peñarol fans, resulting in death threats being made against Dunajec. One of the messages he received read, “We are going to kill you, we already know where you are.”
