Two protesters were also arrested during Saturday’s protest march and are being held at a police station in Yangon, the phone said. Several other anti-government groups also confirmed these arrests. A Japanese embassy official in Myanmar said there were reports of a Japanese national being detained, but declined to provide additional details.
Ongoing interrogation of journalist
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Japanese national was being questioned at a police station in Yangon and the embassy was taking necessary steps to ensure his release. However, Myanmar’s military government is yet to confirm Kubota’s detention. State newspapers that published reports on the arrests of pro-democracy activists did not mention it, but the pro-military account on the messaging app Telegram said that the Japanese national was not to take pictures, but to protest march with a banner. Arrested for participating.
Aung San Suu Kyi’s government was overthrown in 2021
Myanmar’s military seized power in February 2021 by overthrowing the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, strict action is being taken against the people protesting against the military rule in the country. At least 2,138 protesters have been killed by security forces and around 14,917 have been arrested since military rule was imposed in the country, according to figures from Myanmar’s Assistance Association of Political Prisoners. Myanmar’s military government has faced severe international criticism for the execution of four political prisoners last week.
