Myanmar Earthquakes Strike Twice, Felt Across Southeast Asia

Earthquakes shook Myanmar, causing widespread damage.

The first quake hit near the city of Sagaing, about 16 kilometers away. It was 10 kilometers deep and happened around 12:50 pm on Friday, according to the USGS.

China’s seismic network reported a 7.9 magnitude quake. People in Yunnan province felt the tremors, says China’s Xinhua news agency.

In Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, roads cracked and some ceilings collapsed.

The quake also affected neighboring countries. In Bangkok, Thailand, people ran out of high-rise buildings as they swayed violently. Water splashed out of swimming pools.

Some construction workers were trapped under rubble in the Chatuchak district of Bangkok, but there’s no official confirmation yet. Some train services in Bangkok were temporarily suspended.

Thai Prime Minister, Pita Limjaroenrat, canceled her trip to Phuket to attend an emergency meeting after the quake.
