Myanmar Army Admits Firing Warning Shots at Chinese Red Cross Convoy

Myanmar’s military has admitted to firing warning shots at a Chinese Red Cross convoy. The incident happened on Tuesday night. The convoy was on its way to deliver aid to earthquake victims.

The military says it fired three warning shots into the air. This was about 100 meters away from the convoy. They claim the convoy didn’t stop when ordered to. The military also says China didn’t notify them about the convoy’s route in advance. After the warning shots, the convoy changed direction and headed back to the city of Lashio.

A local ethnic group, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, says the convoy was attacked with automatic weapons by Myanmar soldiers. This happened near an area where the two groups have clashed before. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army has condemned the Myanmar government for ignoring humanitarian aid. They’ve offered to escort Chinese aid convoys to ensure safe delivery of relief supplies.

China’s Foreign Ministry has called on all parties in Myanmar to guarantee the safety of Chinese and international aid teams. A Chinese aid convoy is currently heading to the affected areas in Mandalay.

Myanmar is dealing with a severe earthquake crisis. The 7.7 magnitude quake hit on March 28. It affected several areas, including Mandalay, Sagaing, Magway, Bago, Naypyidaw, and southern Shan State. The latest reports say over 3,000 people have died. The military government is facing criticism for its slow response and handling of the crisis.

Despite the tense situation, relief efforts continue. Rescue teams from 15 countries are working with local officials. They’ve managed to save several people trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
