Muzaffar Ali: ‘Umrao Jaan’ (1981) “Still Connects” with Audiences at IFFI

Muzaffar Ali recently reflected on the lasting appeal of his 1981 classic, “Umrao Jaan.” He expressed delight over its re-release at the 56th Indian International Film Festival (IFFI 2025) in Goa. The veteran filmmaker noted the movie still connects with audiences today.

Ali spoke to news agency PTI about the screening and his experience working with lead actress Rekha. He described the re-release as a “re-connection with audiences and people.” He emphasized that “even now it connects with people with the same freshness.”

The 56th IFFI kicked off on November 20 and runs until November 28. The prestigious festival is showcasing over 240 films from 81 countries. A special segment is dedicated to classic Bollywood cinema.

“Umrao Jaan,” starring Rekha, was screened on November 21. Director Ali described Rekha’s “enthusiasm as amazing.” He praised her character and spirit, adding, “She played this character very powerfully.”

Ali’s other film, “Gaman,” is also part of the IFFI classic film lineup. It is scheduled for a screening on November 22.

Other restored Indian classics at the festival include Guru Dutt’s “Pyaasa” and Ritwik Ghatak’s “Subarnarekha.” Kalpana Lajmi’s restored version of “Rudaali” is also being shown on November 22.
