Sebastián Muñoz will be the “other local” in the group that will close the last round of the Byron Nelson tournament.
Not bad for the Dallas-area Colombian who has shared at least the top spot in all three rounds. Muñoz signed a card of 66 hits on Saturday, six under par, and was placed in an accumulated minus 21. He thus has an impact advantage over Jordan Spieth, the favorite of the local public, who is still looking for his first title in the tournament. in which he fought during the final round in 2010, when he was 16 years old and attending high school near here. Spieth had a round of 64 punches. Chilean Joaquín Niemann will be the third player in Sunday’s final group. He stands alone as third in the contest, another shot behind, after completing the Saturday round in 65 shots. James Hahn came close to matching Munoz’s opening round 60 at TPC Craig Ranch. He had a 61 to move up 34 places and tie for fourth with Justin Thomas (6-4). Spieth is 28 years old, one year younger than Muñoz. However, he adds three majors among his 13 career titles, after shining at the University of Texas. Munoz, who played in nearby North Texas, has not won in 2 1/2 years, since he won his only trophy on the PGA Tour. “Except for winning in Bogotá, I have never been the favorite anywhere else,” Muñoz acknowledged. “So, this is a familiar place. Jordan is of course the idol here and everyone’s favorite. We are good friends, so tomorrow’s round is going to be a lot of fun.”
