Mumbai Indians Win WPL Championship For Second Time

In a heart-stopping finale, the Mumbai Indians clinched their second Women’s Premier League title by defeating the Delhi Capitals by 8 runs. This thrilling match, held at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, saw the home team set a target of 149 runs after being put in to bat. Despite a valiant effort, Delhi’s innings ended just short of the mark, leaving them to ponder what could have been. The match went down to the wire, with the last over deciding the fate of the championship, but Delhi captain Meg Lanning couldn’t quite pull off the magic to prevent her team from losing their third consecutive final.

The WPL 2025 tournament has once again seen a team chasing at the Brabourne Stadium end up on the losing side. Mumbai, who lost the toss, was asked to bat first and got off to a shaky start. However, a crucial 89-run partnership between captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt steadied the ship. Harmanpreet led from the front with a top-notch 66, while Sciver-Brunt chipped in with a valuable 30. The momentum shift was palpable as these two batted with grit and determination, lifting Mumbai from a precarious position to a respectable total.

When Delhi’s turn came, only Marizanne Kapp and Jemimah Rodrigues managed to make significant contributions with the bat, scoring 40 and 30 runs, respectively. Besides these two, Nikki Prasad showed resilience by staying at the crease till the end. The situation became increasingly tense as Delhi found themselves with only one wicket in hand and 14 runs needed for victory. The equation boiled down to 10 runs off the last ball, but in the end, they could only manage a single run, handing Mumbai a thrilling 8-run victory.

This win marks Mumbai’s second WPL championship title, cementing their status as one of the powerhouses of the tournament. Incidentally, Mumbai had also won the inaugural season of the WPL, defeating Delhi by 7 wickets in the final. This time around, the margin was slightly larger, with Delhi falling 8 runs short. Notably, Mumbai becomes the first team to win the WPL twice, while Delhi, on the other hand, has the unenviable record of losing three consecutive finals – to Mumbai in 2023, to RCB in 2024, and now again to Mumbai in 2025. This string of losses will undoubtedly be a hard pill for the Delhi team to swallow, but it also serves as a testament to the competitive spirit and high standards of the Women’s Premier League.
