Mukesh Khanna Worries Over Ranbir Kapoor’s Ram Portrayal in ‘Ramayana’

The buzz around director Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film ‘Ramayana’ is simply massive. This project aims to be one of the most expensive Indian films ever made, with a budget reportedly hitting around 4000 crore rupees. It’s set to release in two parts, with Ranbir Kapoor stepping into the highly anticipated role of Lord Ram.

But not everyone is cheering from the sidelines. Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, known to many as ‘Shaktimaan’ and Bhishma Pitamah from the beloved TV series ‘Mahabharat’, has voiced some serious worries. He recently shared his thoughts in an interview with ‘Galatta India’.

Ranbir Kapoor and the ‘Animal’ Image: A Casting Conundrum?

Mukesh Khanna isn’t quite sold on Ranbir Kapoor portraying Lord Ram. He pointed out that Ram is no ordinary warrior; he is ‘Maryada Purushottam,’ a title signifying the ideal man. This character represents ultimate sacrifice, self-control, and humbleness. Khanna feels Ranbir, despite being a talented actor, carries the powerful and aggressive image from his recent movie ‘Animal’.

The big question, according to Khanna, is whether audiences will truly accept Ranbir as the serene and virtuous Lord Ram. He wonders if the raw energy from ‘Animal’ will clash with the calm grace needed for this epic role. It’s a valid point, given how deeply some characters stick with actors in the minds of fans.

Grand Plans for ‘Ramayana’

Despite these concerns, the film itself is shaping up to be a grand spectacle. Nitesh Tiwari, acclaimed for hits like ‘Dangal’ and ‘Chhichhore’, is at the helm. The cast is packed with stars: Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.

Adding to the excitement is the music. For the first time ever, Oscar winner A.R. Rahman and Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer are teaming up for this project. Their collaboration could give ‘Ramayana’ a truly global appeal, making it a film that resonates beyond borders.

Are Mukesh Khanna’s Worries Justified?

Mukesh Khanna’s concerns go beyond just Ranbir’s casting. He also questioned if the film will truly honor religious feelings in its story and presentation. He believes that presenting ‘Ramayana’ in a very modern style could cause it to lose its very essence and soul.

He made it clear that he has no personal issues with Ranbir Kapoor. However, he stressed that playing such a noble, restrained, and selfless character requires more than just good acting. It means truly living that iconic image, both on and off screen, for the audience to fully believe.

When Can We See ‘Ramayana’?

Fans will need to be patient. The first part of ‘Ramayana’ is scheduled to hit theaters during Diwali in 2026. The second part will follow in 2027. This two-part epic is being made not just for local audiences but for viewers all around the world.
