MTV Video Vanguard Award: Honoring Music Icons from Bowie to Shakira

When we talk about artists who truly revolutionized music videos, names like Madonna, Britney Spears, and Kanye West always pop up. They, along with many other legends, have received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. This award celebrates artists whose visual work has shaped the industry, making it more than just a song.

The very first artist to earn this top honor was David Bowie. He received the recognition at the VMAs’ launch in 1984. Seven years later, MTV decided to rename the award to celebrate Michael Jackson, who had taken home the Moon Person trophy in 1988. However, this changed again in 2019. After the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland” brought up abuse allegations against Jackson, his name was removed from the award. All mentions of the late artist were also taken down from the MTV website and the 2019 awards broadcast. It’s worth remembering that Jackson, who passed away in 2009, always denied all accusations against him during his lifetime.

The Video Vanguard Award isn’t handed out every single year, making it even more special when it is. At the 36th annual VMAs, Missy Elliott made history. She became the first female rapper to receive the Vanguard award, a huge moment for hip-hop and visual artistry. In 2018, Jennifer Lopez marked another milestone. She became the first Latina artist to earn the coveted prize. More recently, in 2023, Shakira stepped into the spotlight, becoming the first South American artist to take home that special honor.

These artists stand as a reminder that a great song can become an unforgettable experience when paired with groundbreaking visuals.
