When José Mourinho steps to the microphone, you always get a show. He recently spoke ahead of a big European match, refusing to guess Benfica’s starting lineup. The coach suggested predicting his own Fenerbahçe team was easier than guessing Benfica’s. He offered high praise for Benfica’s manager, Bruno Lage, and the strong squad at his disposal for Wednesday’s crucial game at Estádio da Luz.
Mourinho highlighted Lage’s good fortune, saying, “Bruno is a happy coach, with a thousand options.” He pointed out that Benfica has so many talented players that Lage can play however he wants. The team offers various tactical approaches. Mourinho emphasized the squad’s immense depth. Benfica can easily swap players and bring different energy onto the field. He repeated that Fenerbahçe is simpler to figure out than Benfica. Mourinho then confirmed two players for Fenerbahçe’s midfield. “I do not want to be a liar,” he stated. “I don’t want you to start saying later that I’m playing ‘mind games’.” He simply explained that Fenerbahçe is not tough to understand. In their last league game, he rested two or three players who were tired. Amrabat and Szymanski did not play in that league match. They were saved to play tomorrow and run a lot. Mourinho admitted his team does not have many options to try different things.
Fenerbahçe could secure a spot in the Champions League tomorrow. This would mark their return to Europe’s top club competition after a 17-year absence. Despite this long break, Mourinho dismisses the idea that qualification would be one of the most important moments in Fenerbahçe’s history.
“I won two Champions Leagues, yes,” he said, drawing a clear line. “But I have no connection to tomorrow’s knockout stage. So, no, not at all.” He also shot down the idea that Bruno Lage’s Benfica team leans heavily to the right side of the field. This theory suggested they depend on the teamwork between Amar Dedic and Fredrik Aursnes. “I think Benfica is not tilted to the right side nor to the left,” Mourinho corrected. He described Benfica as a balanced team that defends well. They are very structured when attacking. The team builds up play effectively and has fast players who can attack open spaces. “Benfica is a good team,” he concluded. “I was not trying to sell a story and place Benfica at a level that is not theirs. Benfica is a complete, competitive, and very balanced team.” Mourinho’s only goal for tomorrow’s match is straightforward: to win.
