Mountaineer found alive after three days lost in Annapurna

He is in critical condition but alive. An Indian mountaineer was found Thursday, three days after his disappearance, in a crevasse of Annapurna. Located in Nepal, it is one of the most dangerous mountains in the world. Anurag Maloo, 34, was descending from a camp at 5,600 meters above sea level on Annapurna on Monday when he fell into a crevasse.

Helicopter rescue teams searched from this isolated area of the mountain range. According to Chhang Dawa Sherpa of the organization Seven Summit Treks, the climber fell 300m to the bottom of the crevasse from which he was extracted by a team of eight people. “He is in critical condition and has been airlifted to a hospital in Pokhara for treatment,” he said.

Several dramas

Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain in the world, is technically difficult to climb and has a higher death rate than Everest. On Monday, famed Northern Irish mountaineer Noel Hanna, 56, died at Camp 4 after successfully climbing the summit. The next day, Indian mountaineer Baljeet Kaur, 28, and his compatriot Arjun Vajpai, 30, were rescued after several hours of searching.

The mountaineering season in the Himalayas got off to a tragic start last week with the disappearance of three Nepalese climbers on Everest. The trio were traversing the treacherous Khumbu Icefall as they carried supplies to Camp 1, the first stage on the route to the summit of Everest, when they were hit by a mass of snow and swept into the bottom of a crevasse.

Eight very dangerous peaks in Nepal

Nepal is home to eight of the ten highest peaks in the world and welcomes hundreds of climbers each spring, when the temperatures are milder and the winds generally light. The government has issued for this season more than 700 permits for the ascent of the various mountains of the Himalayas, including 319 for that of Everest.
