Mother sacrifices herself to save her children after a shipwreck

A trip to sea took a dramatic turn. In Venezuela, a mother sacrificed herself to keep her children alive following the sinking of their pleasure craft.

The group of nine people ventured out to sea on September 3 for a two-day boat trip to La Tortuga, a desert island in the Caribbean. But on September 5, “the port authorities were informed (…) that the boat had not reached its destination or had not returned to the place from which it had left”, explained the Authority. National Maritime Federation of Venezuela (INEA). Without news from the group, a search operation was launched to find them.

Two days later, four people could be located. They were two children, their mother and their 25-year-old nanny. 40-year-old mother Mariely Chacon did everything to save her children, aged 6 and 2, after the boat the group was in was destroyed by a wave, reports the Daily Mail. Thus, the mother went so far as to drink her own urine in order to be able to breastfeed them and keep them alive. When they arrived, help found the two children, Jose David and Maria Beatriz, near the lifeless body of their mother. “She died of dehydration three or four hours before the rescue. She had not drunk water for three days, ”detailed a representative of INEA.

First degree burns

On the ship, rescuers also found the nanny, safe and sound, hidden in a refrigerator to protect herself from the heat. First-degree burned and dehydrated, the children were rushed to hospital. They are now out of danger.

Currently, the five other people on the boat at the time of the tragedy, including the father of the family Remis David Camblor, are still missing, said the British daily. Research continues to find them.
