Morocco will build a gigantic barracks for the Royal Gendarmerie, one of its elite corps, in the Sahara, more precisely in the city of Guelmim, according to sources from the neighboring country who have told LA RAZÓN.
For the construction of this new facility, an expropriation for the disposal of the land was recently carried out, signed by President Aziz Akhannouch. The barracks will be built on an area of more than 22,000 m2. To get an idea of the scale of this project: According to the sources mentioned above, the last gendarmerie barracks, inaugurated in August 2022 in Jebha (Chefchaouen province), was built on an area of 467 m2 and required a budget of 5, 8 million dirhams (more than half a million euros).
Guelmim, also called the Gateway to the Sahara, is the capital of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region. The Royal Gendarmerie, the equivalent of the Civil Guard, is part of the Moroccan armed forces but carries out administrative and police functions in rural areas.
