Morocco U20 Wins Semifinal with All Three Goalies, Third Saves Decisive Penalty

Morocco’s U20 national team made history by deploying all three of its goalkeepers in a single World Cup semi-final, a tactical gamble that paid off with their third-choice keeper saving the decisive penalty against France. The unprecedented strategy secured Morocco a 5-4 victory in the shootout, sending them to the final for the first time.

Abdelhakim Mesbahi, the team’s third-choice goalkeeper, emerged as the hero of the match. He successfully defended the crucial penalty that sealed Morocco’s historic win.

Coach Mohamed Ouahbi made the bold decision to substitute Mesbahi specifically for the penalty shootout, replacing midfielder Yanis Benchaouch and goalkeeper Ibrahim Gomis. This calculated risk ultimately proved decisive.

The team’s usual starting goalkeeper, Yanis Benchaouch, was forced off due to injury in the 64th minute. Ibrahim Gomis then entered the game as the first substitute keeper.

The semifinal clash remained tied 1-1 through the end of extra time, necessitating a penalty shootout to determine the finalist. Morocco will now face Argentina in the championship match, where they will contend with players like Prestianni.
