The visit of the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, to Morocco is a diplomatic milestone of utmost importance. During this visit he was welcomed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. received.
For him, this was another opportunity to reiterate the position expressed in April 2022 on the Sahara issue, since the autonomy of this region under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most important basis for coexistence. By taking a clear position on the Sahara issue, Sánchez lived up to history and acted in the service of regional stability.
He also acknowledged Madrid’s interest in the King of Morocco’s strategic initiatives surrounding an alliance of African states bordering the Atlantic and the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project.
President Sánchez also recalled that the joint organization of the 2030 World Cup with Portugal represents a real opportunity for the development of relations between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
Actually, Madrid’s relationships are very intense. There are obviously historical and cultural ties that stem from centuries of shared history, sometimes tragic, but which have not caused rancor. But relationships today are a matter of reason and not memory.
They are strategically important because the two countries are doomed to do so due to their geographical proximity. As far as security is concerned, The collaboration is at its finest for a long time. Whether on human trafficking, drugs or terrorism, Morocco has stuck to its commitments even when relations between the two countries have been in crisis.
It is the Spanish authorities who confirm it. The remarkable cooperation between Rabat and Madrid in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking There is no equivalent in terms of the quality of information and complete trust between the two countries and their respective security services.
The Rabat-Madrid axis continues to be the structuring axis of relations between the north and the south of the Mediterranean. This axis is crucial in this turbulent moment when the poles of stability are collapsing one by one and when even the Strait of Gibraltar, crucial to trade between the two banks of the Mare Nostrum, is being controlled by Iranian proxies who are allied with the Polisario Front are threatened.
And the threat clearly came from a senior Iranian military officer: “They will soon have to wait for the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and other waterways to be closed against them,” said Mohamed Reza Naqdi, a senior officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Council.
On an economic level Both countries have made a gigantic effort to modernize. We have evolved from two comparable and therefore competing economies to a collaboration that today makes Spain Morocco’s main trading partner in competition with France.
However, both countries are looking ahead. If Sánchez welcomed the royal initiatives, it is because Morocco has been in power since 2008 and after the speech of King Mohammed VI. in Abidjan has demonstrably become the undisputed leader in Africa in terms of common development.
In addition to its geographical location, it is a key position that interests anyone who wants to get involved in the black continent and the one with the greatest growth potential is Spain.
This strategic relationship will deepen because it is in the interests of both countries.
