Moreirense’s Marcelo Stays Grounded After First League Defeat to Gil Vicente

The scoreboard told a tough story on Friday. Moreirense, until then, had been one of just three teams boasting a perfect record after three league games. That streak ended in Barcelos. They fell to Gil Vicente, losing 2-0.

Experienced defender Marcelo spoke after the final whistle. He wasn’t overly concerned by the scoreline. Marcelo made it clear that the team isn’t getting carried away by their strong start. He emphasized that the group understands their place in the league.

“We keep our feet firmly on the ground,” Marcelo stated. “We know our league well, and we knew this game would be very difficult. We didn’t get the victory. We will look at what we did wrong, and we have the international break now to make corrections.” The team has a chance to regroup.

Marcelo reflected on the flow of the match. “After they scored, we took control of the game,” he explained. “We created opportunities, but we just couldn’t score. Then, at the end, we pushed for the equalizer and ended up conceding again.” He admitted this was new territory for them. “We didn’t know how to handle it, since it’s the first time we’ve been in this situation,” he said. “We tried to level the score, but we couldn’t do it. Now, we must look forward and work to correct things for the next game.”
