Moolman gives the big surprise in the colossus Thyon 2000 of the Tour de Romandía

40 years are not celebrated every day, and even less, adorned with the most precious garment in cycling: the rainbow jersey. All the ingredients were brought together so that Anniemek van Vleuten celebrate one of its most special anniversaries in style in a second stage of the Tour de Romandie that he had an idyllic end in store for his climbing characteristics: Thyon 2000. The Swiss summit was the first in the history of the Women World Tour to be crowned beyond 2,000 meters altitude (2,090 m.), but another veteran runner gave the surprise to register her name at the top, ahead of Van Vleuten herself.

And it is that the South African Ashleigh Molman (36 years), who had not won for more than a year in the ninth stage of the Giro Donne, gave the bell by beating the world champion, the first cyclist to achieve it this year after the performances exhibited by the Dutchwoman in the Giro, Tour and La Vuelta. the general, in the absence of a flat day with an outcome that is expected to sprint, is resolved in favor of Moolman, with Van Vleuten 30 seconds behind and the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini third, 49″ behind.

Despite the surprise, it should be noted that the South African won deservedly and showing enormous courage. With the group of favorites fragmented into a thousand pieces in the last kilometers of Thyon 2000, it was she herself who took the initiative to select the group even more. Just Van Vleuten, Lippert (which next year will run in Movistar) and Kastelijn resisted his pace with 8km to go. A few minutes later, Van Vleuten decided to take action without looking back, true to form, and was left alone with Moolman. However, the Dutchwoman’s legs, after a year of so much wear and tear, were not those of great occasions. With the rain adding that bit of epic so typical of cycling, Moolman attacked with 2.5 km to go and pinned the rainbow bearer, who will have to settle for a podium to conclude a dream season for her.
