Formula 1 will not be broadcast on free TV in the 2023 season either. After more than 30 years, RTL has decided not to acquire the TV rights anymore due to the high costs. Until 2022, the private broadcaster, in cooperation with the pay-TV broadcaster Sky, still showed four races on free TV, but these will also be completely eliminated for the 2023 season. These are now being streamed by Sky on its own YouTube channel.
From this season onwards, all official F1 broadcasts in Germany can only be viewed via Sky. However, if you use a VPN, you can still enjoy Formula 1 effectively for free.

Our country neighbors Austria (ORF, ServusTV) and Switzerland (SRF) continue to show Formula 1 on free TV. Unfortunately, due to a country ban, we cannot easily see these broadcasts, for example via live streams. With a VPN – such as that from Cyberghost, ExpressVPN, Surfshark VPN or NordVPN – you can easily bypass this country block and save yourself the high costs for the pay TV channel Sky.
With VPN you can watch Formula 1 for free – completely legally
With a VPN you can legally watch Formula 1 for almost free. So not flimsy streams from some gray area of the internet. Nevertheless, you pay significantly less than with expensive pay TV channels and also enjoy other advantages of a VPN. For worry-free transmission, we recommend the following VPN providers for streaming:
Cyberghost VPN from €2.19/month
Premium service ExpressVPN from 6 euros/month
Surfshark VPN from 2.30 euros/month
NordVPN from €3.49/month
Other advantages of a VPN
With Cyberghost’s VPN you can expect a few more advantages: you benefit from dedicated streaming servers, over 7000 servers in 90 countries and unlimited bandwidth. Furthermore, no logging data of your activities are stored. You have access to 24/7 live support and you can use the VPN on multiple devices at the same time.
Apple and Android smartphones, Windows, MacOS, Linux, browsers such as Chrome and Firefox are supported, as well as Android TV, Apple TV & Amazon’s FireTV. And best of all: VPNs are available, depending on the provider and selected subscription, starting at 2 euros per month. In addition to Cyberghost, we recommend the providers Surfshark VPN, NordVPN and Express VPN.
For comparison: At Sky Germany there is Formula 1 with a sports subscription from 20 euros per month (annual subscription) or in the Supersport ticket via Sky Ticket from 19.99 euros per month in an annual subscription or for 29.99 euros in a monthly subscription.
Formula 1: 2023 racing calendar
The 2023 Formula 1 season consists of 23 races. A race weekend usually consists of three training sessions, qualifying and the final race or, at six GPs, training sessions, sprint shootout, qualifying and the race.
Note: RTL no longer broadcasts races. For training sessions, qualification and races, you have to use the VPN option or the pay TV channel Sky. You can easily watch the races via VPN on the Swiss channel SRF and the Austrian channels ServusTV and ORF (not Servus TV Germany!), which split the races among themselves.
In the following table we have listed all Grand Prix and which broadcasters are broadcasting the races. The start times of the races are always given in Central European Summer Time (CEST).
