Montmeló ties to F1 and MotoGP

The wait was too long to ensure the continuity of the Spanish GP on the F1 calendar just one season ago, when the agreement was only renewed for one year, but finally the Circuit de Barcelona has managed to re-secure its presence in the World Championship, at least until 2026. The cars will visit Montmeló during the next five courses and as part of the agreement, the track undertakes to make improvements to the track and the facilities before filming on May 22, with the return of the Big circus to this stage.

It was in 1991 when Formula 1 first set foot on Montmeló with a completely different program than the one that the World Cup will have to fulfill from next season, to meet the demands of the Consell Executiu. The circuit will bet “on sustainability” as Roger Torrent acknowledges, Minister of Business and Labor of the Generalitat, and that has been the starting point for the institutions to have yielded to a five-year agreement, which they rejected just a few months ago even with a lower longevity. “This contract, which includes a mutual commitment clause to help us turn the Circuit into a model and global benchmark for sustainability applied to this type of facility. We want an exponent of the green transformation and the adaptation of infrastructures to occur to which the climate emergency requires us, “he clarified.

For his part, the highest representative of the Great Circus, Stefano Domenicali, He wanted to “thank the promoter and the authorities for their enthusiasm and commitment to keep F1 in Barcelona, with the improvements that will be made to continue this long journey together”. Since the championship they are “delighted to announce this deal” and they put the main focus of attention on the local idols, above all, for the future that is expected of them within the World Cup before the possibility of bringing another title home: “The teams and the drivers always hope to compete in this circuit and visit Barcelona. In addition, Spanish fans will be able to continue to see their heroes, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, up close. “

MotoGP gets on the bandwagon

The good news has also come from the world of two wheels. Although MotoGP confirmed that from 2023 there would be rotations in the calendar with the great prizes that are celebrated in the peninsula, being Jerez, MotorLand, Montmeló, Cheste and Portimao the affected scenarios, the Circuit also extends its alliance with this championship until 2026, and officially guarantees at least two race weekends on the Catalan track between 2023 and the end date. Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna, assured that “this renewal is fantastic news for MotoGP”, and highlights the link between the Circuit de Barcelona and the organizer: “The Catalan track has been linked to MotoGP since Dorna’s first beginnings and has been a key piece in each season’s calendar”.
