Monterrey Surrenders 2-0 Lead In 2-2 Draw Against FC Juárez

C.F. Monterrey surrendered a two-goal advantage to settle for a 2-2 draw against FC Juárez late Friday night at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juárez. The Liga MX Clausura match saw Rayados build a commanding first-half lead before a crucial red card shifted the balance of power, allowing the home side to salvage a point.

Monterrey struck immediately after the opening whistle. Uroš Đurđević found the back of the net in the first minute of play. The visitors maintained their pressure throughout the first half and doubled their advantage deep into stoppage time when Jesús “Tecatito” Corona scored in the 45 minute. Monterrey took that 2-0 lead into the locker room.

The trajectory of the match completely reversed in the second half. Monterrey defender Víctor Guzmán received a second yellow card and was sent off, reducing his team to 10 men. FC Juárez aggressively capitalized on the numerical advantage. Jairo Torres broke through to cut the deficit in half. Shortly after, Óscar Estupiñán converted a penalty kick to level the score at 2-2.

Monterrey avoided a complete collapse largely due to the efforts of goalkeeper Luis “Mochis” Cárdenas. He recorded several spectacular, game-saving stops on the goal line during the final minutes to preserve the draw.

This blown lead caps off a difficult week for Monterrey under manager Nicolás Sánchez. Prior to Friday’s draw, the club suffered a domestic defeat in the Clásico Regio against rivals Tigres UANL and dropped the first leg of their Concachampions tie to Cruz Azul. The squad is currently battling a severe injury crisis. Key contributors including Lucas Ocampos, Iker Fimbres, and Sergio Canales are managing knocks or missing time entirely.

The depleted roster faces a congested sports calendar in the coming weeks. Monterrey will play a pivotal CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 second leg against Cruz Azul on Tuesday, March 17. That match has been relocated to the Estadio Cuauhtémoc. Following the international fixture, Rayados return to Liga MX action with high-profile home clashes at the Estadio BBVA against Chivas on March 21 and Atlético San Luis on April 4.
