Montero brings Betis closer to salvation

Real Betis Basketball celebrated this Tuesday against Bàsquet Girona in the Fontajau pavilion (79-90) a key victory in the fight for permanence and epic because they came back from the score with a 0-24 in the last seven minutes of the duel, of the penultimate day.

Jean Montero, with 25 points, 10 assists and a PIR of 32, he led the reaction of Luis Casimiro’s team, which added the fifth victory in seven games and drew ten wins with Girona before receiving Coviran Granada (17th) in a key duel. Girona harassed too much the physical problems of Kameron Taylor, who could only play 13 minutes, and Marc Gasol, unprecedented, he gave up his ‘basket average’ with the Andalusian team and regretted the third defeat in a row when it seemed that he could celebrate staying with his fans.

The match started with a new display of power from Roko Prkacin (6-4) and Girona soon linked three triples to achieve an advantage of up to 17 points (22-5) after a 14-0 run. The locals were better both in attack and defense, to the frustration of a Betis that only scored five points in the first seven points. The visitors responded with three triples, but the first period closed with a 30-14. Girona had scored 16 points in the paint to two for Betis.

Anzejs Pasecniks led Betis forward at the start of the second period (32-19), but each Andalusian coup had its Catalan reply. Pato Garino returned to raise the local income up to 17 points after the eighth visitor’s loss (41-24). Betis managed to get within ten points (45-35), but Girona reached the break with a 13-point lead (48-35). The differences in success justified the differences in the score: 66% to 50% in free throws, 60% to 36% in two-point shots and 46% to 35% in triples.

The second half began with a 6-0 run to feed the maximum advantage to 19 points (54-34). Colom and Jenkins continued to do damage based on triples (62-45): the locals scored eight of their first 15 three-point shots. But Betis did not give up, with ten goals from BJ Johnson in the third period, and they reached the last quarter with the psychic injection of having been able to break the ten-point barrier: 71-62 with a three-pointer from Montero at the buzzer.

Jenkins seemed to seal the game with two consecutive three-pointers (79-66), but Betis answered with an 8-0 run to get within five points with five minutes to go (79-74). Aíto asked for a time out, but did not stop the Andalusian impetus: Tyson linked five points to set the first draw since 4-4 and Montero, Cvetkovic and Volodymyr Gerun turned the score around (79-90, 0-24). Girona did not hit any shot from two in the last quarter and failed to score in the last seven minutes.
