Montenegro Tops Portugal 29-22 in Women’s Euro Handball Qualifier

Montenegro’s women’s handball team secured a decisive 29-22 victory over Portugal on Wednesday, marking a dominant start to their Euro 2026 qualification campaign in Podgorica.

The win underlined Montenegro’s status as the favored team in Group 4. The host nation, ranked eighth globally, outmatched 23rd-ranked Portugal.

Montenegro, boasting several players from the Champions League, established an early lead. Portugal, despite a spirited effort, could not overcome this advantage.

The home side took control five minutes into the match, securing a 4-3 lead. They built a 17-11 advantage by halftime.

While the second half saw a more balanced contest, Montenegro’s victory was never in doubt.

Durdina Jaukovic led Montenegro’s scoring with eight goals. For Portugal, Carmen Figueiredo scored six goals. Luciana Rebelo added four.

This match was the opening fixture for both teams in Group 4. Another Group 4 match, Iceland against the Faroe Islands, was scheduled for later the same day.
