Momparler: “We will see if Felipe Orts can be among the top ten”

El seleccionador español de ciclismo Pascual Momparler posa en una entrevista para AS.

The Spanish cyclo-cross team will attend the European Championships that are held this weekend in Wijster (Drenthe, Netherlands) with the main asset of the national champion of the modality, Felipe Orts, who should aspire, according to the national coach, Pascual Momparler, “to a position among the top 10.”

The first big cyclo-cross event of the season takes place in the Dutch province of Drenthe, specifically in the Col du Vam circuit, 2,700 meters long, where Spain will deploy a team made up of 17 cyclists.

The national coach Pascual Momparler has made a team in which there will be two elite cyclists: Felipe Orts, that in the last edition of the European achieved a brilliant 7th place after fighting for the medals for a good part of the race, and Iván Feijoo.

In the elite category there will be no female representative because Aida Nuño will not be able to attend due to injury since Lucía González will focus her efforts on the Llodio and Karrantza Cups of Spain.

“Without a doubt our trump card will be Felipe Orts, we will see if he can qualify in the top 10, and if there is luck a little later. He is a rider who knows the international calendar better and better and has already shown that he is capable of achieving victories. I would like a position between 5 and 7. It would be incredible, “Momparler told EFE.

Within the line of working with young runners, the national coach also trusts Iván Feijoo, “who must follow the good evolution shown as sub’23” and from which he expects a position in the top 30.

It will be a European that will offer some advantage for the applicants of the so-called second echelon to gain positions, Since the main figures of the modality will be missing, the Dutch Mathieu Van der Poel, the Belgian Wout Van Aert and the British Thomas Pidcock.

In the sub23 category, Momparler will feature Miguel Rodríguez, Alain Suárez, Miguel Sánchez, Lydia Pinto, Carla Fernández and Sara Bonillo; while the juniors who will represent Spain in Drenthe will be Uxía Soto, Vania Rico, Marta Beti, Laura María Mira, Pablo Calvo, Raúl Mira, Iván Gomar, Ricardo Martín and Miguel González.

During the day on Saturday, the junior female and sub’23 male races will be held between 11:00 and 13:15 respectively, and as the closing of the day, the elite women’s event will be played, which will start at 3:00 p.m.

On Sunday, the juniors will be in charge of opening the competition at 11:00 a.m. and after them, at 1:15 p.m., the U23 women will run. The long-awaited men’s elite race will take place on Sunday at 3pm.

“That Valverde confirms that it continues is great news”

Pascual Momparler, national cycling coach, considers “great news” that Alejandro Valverde, 41, has confirmed his continuity in the peloton in the 2022 season and showed his willingness to continue counting on the 2018 World Champion.

“The more years Valverde remains in the peloton, the better, and confirming that he continues until 2022 is great news. If we can continue to enjoy him it would be very nice. As a coach I am glad that he continues, he is the best current Spanish rider, the 11th in the world, and the points he gets are good for our cycling to be ahead, “the national coach told EFE.

For Momparler, the 41 years of the Murcian cyclist, who has closed the 2021 season with 3 wins, it is not an obstacle to continue counting on the Movistar cyclist.

“I am interested in the mental age, not the DNI. If he is fit and wants to come to the national team I will not be the one to say that I do not want to have him, “he concluded.
