Moment: Ukrainian drones destroy $70 million Russian missile corvette

The Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (GUR) claimed responsibility on Thursday for an attack that took place in Ukraine last night Black Sea in which one of his task forces destroyed one Tarantul-class missile corvette of Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation. “As a result of the direct hits,” the GUR statement said, “the Russian ship suffered damage” that led to its sinking.

At the time of the attack, the corvette was patrolling near the western coast of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, which has been occupied by Russia since 2014 and is the main operating base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The GUR released a video with images captured by kamikaze drones that hit the Russian ship, which, according to this Kiev Defense Ministry security structure, would be worth between $60 and $70 million.

The Tarantul-class corvette is a Soviet patrol vessel type developed in the mid-1960s. Between 1967 and 1989, 137 ships of this type were built in Leningrad and Vladivostok. The length of the ship is 39.94 m with a displacement of 238 tons. Its speed is 35.6 knots. The ship usually offers space for up to 30 crew members.

The military intelligence note thanks the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the Kiev-launched fundraising platform UNITED24 for their contribution to this attack. Both the ministry and UNITED24 have an ambitious program to equip the army with drones.

Yesterday Russia also reported the firing of around twenty Ukrainian missiles over the Black Sea and the Crimean peninsula. According to Moscow, the remains of some rockets fell on a military base near Sevastopol. According to the Russian version, the aircraft located there were not damaged.
