Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is in the news again, and it’s not just for his latest film. Over a year has passed since he stepped down from his role as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Now, he’s finally opening up about why he made that surprising decision.
Facing the Fire
Mohanlal recently chatted with AsiaNet News. He talked about the criticism he faced while in office. “Suddenly, we became enemies of many people,” he shared. This pressure came after the Hema Committee report was released. This report looked into protecting artists from exploitation and harassment. AMMA, and Mohanlal himself, faced harsh words for not taking stronger action.
But Mohanlal insists the criticism wasn’t the sole reason for his resignation. He felt it was simply “time to fully put a stop to it.” He believes those who left the organization due to disagreements will now return.
A New Chapter for AMMA
His exit, he explains, was not a defeat. Instead, it was a normal change in leadership. He highlighted positive changes since his departure. After elections this year, women took on key leadership roles in AMMA. Shweta Menon became the first woman to hold the president’s post.
Mohanlal served two terms as AMMA president. He led the organization from 2018 to 2021 and again from 2021 to 2024. He was expected to continue for another term, from 2024 to 2027, but he chose not to run.
His resignation formally took place in August 2024. This happened after the Hema Committee report and the criticisms. The entire committee was then disbanded.
Still Shining on Screen
Beyond his past leadership, Mohanlal remains busy on screen. His most recent film is ‘Hridayapoorvam,’ currently playing in theaters. Earlier this year, he also starred in ‘Thudarum’ and ‘L2 Empuraan.’ Both films were box office hits. Critics and audiences alike enjoyed them.
